Spiritual But Not Religious?

hike

How many of us have heard the phrase, “spiritual but not religious” used in our culture? Perhaps some inactive, non-practicing Catholics may have said this phrase to you or maybe you heard this even in your own family. Here is a good referring article to send them to read. I would recommend that you ask his or her permission before you send it. Below is an excellent but short article written by a wonderful priest named Fr. Mike Schmitz who hails from the great state of Minnesota. Click on the article in the link below. Enjoy!

Dear Fr. Allan, Thanks for being a priest and for your columns. The point about being spiritual and not religious being idolatry is well taken. One other thing that distresses me is that very often people just assume that they are not going to die today, and therefore there is not the concern about keeping up with Sacraments (including Confession / Reconciliation), prayer, and Church teaching, to stay prepared for their own personal judgement, which perhaps was more emphasized before Vatican II, though there are many good things that came after Vatican II, such as the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Maybe it would help each of us to be reflecting on the words we want to hear at personal judgement by Jesus Christ: “Well done My good and faithful servant,” or possibly “Get out My sight you evil-doer,” as death, judgement, heaven, hell remain the four final things. Thanks for your consideration.
    In caritate Christi,
