A Prayerful Response to The Dallas Tragedy

Back in 1963, our president, John F. Kennedy, was shot and assassinated in Dallas. Now over 50 years later, another shooting tragedy, as many of us are aware of through the various media outlets, has struck Dallas again through a series of assassinations that targeted the lives of police officers. These brutal acts of hatred, whether it be of terrorism or any other type of shooting violence, is to be condemned.

Let us pray:

O God, we offer up a prayer of thanksgiving to you this day for police officers who serve in our communities and willingly put their lives on the line to keep us safe and secure. We pray for a hedge of protection around them and their families. We also pray for a greater respect for those in authority, that they may understand and respond accordingly to the leadership responsibilities that you have entrusted to them. We pray for all involved in the Dallas tragedy including the repose of the soul of the shooter, the deceased victims, and the family and friends of the victims affected by the shootings. In addition, we pray for our country that it may be healed from the wounds of racism and other forms of division. Finally, we pray for a spirit of peace, love, forgiveness, and mercy to prevail in the hearts of all Americans. We pray all of this through the intercession of Mary, our Mother of Perpetual Help, in the name of  Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

  1. I’ve shared this many times, sometimes sharing only the prayer. Today I altered the prayer a little (see below), in light of the tragedy in Baton Rouge, changing “Dallas” to that city. I also changed the prayer for the shooter from “repose of his soul” to “his repentance and conversion.” With trust in the great and mighty power of prayer I will continue to share this for all the intentions included in it, though I hope no more cities are added to it, that it may be altered to a “general” form. It’s an enduring prayer.
