Light in The Darkness:

A Response to The Approved Abortion Amendments

While voters in Kentucky voted against an abortion amendment to their state’s constitution, which is very encouraging, and while the verdict is still out in the state of Montana, voters in California, Vermont, and Michigan passed pro-abortion amendments this past Tuesday. In my own state of Michigan the approval of Proposition 3 legalizes abortion anywhere (medical facility or otherwise), any time (up through the point of birth), and may involve anyone (mother as well as her doctor or anyone unqualified) with out any legal consequences, a move far worse than Roe V. Wade (1973) and Casey V. Planned Parenthood (1992). As a voter and a Pro-Life Priest, I needed…

some time to process this tragic news in my own state of Michigan like many of us have over the course of this past week. Emotions ran high through my mind…Disappointment…Frustration…Anger…Letdown…Etc… Perhaps you can relate. Then as I was reading through an email thread I received, I was struck by a testimony from a woman by the name of Marianne. She stated the following in regards to the abortion amendment that passed in the state of Michigan for Proposition 3:

“For those of us who are disappointed this morning (Wednesday):  We need to remember that God already knew about this. This is when our deep faith must kick in. Think of how the people felt when Jesus was crucified on the cross. It looked like he lost didn’t it. But we know he really won. We win in the end because God wins in the end. He is allowing evil to flourish as the Bible says that it will. We really shouldn’t be surprised. We did our part. I know he is proud of those standing on the front lines and those praying in the dark. He will say to us ‘well done thou good and faithful servant’ (Mt. 25:23) as we continue to persevere until he takes us. Keep pressing on believers!! He walks beside us in the days to come. We need to manifest His peace and love no matter what we see happening around us. The light shines brighter as the darkness gets darker.”

As people who will continue to be a witness to life from conception until natural death, may Marianne’s words inspire us to shine our light of faith brighter no matter the circumstances that our Lord allows us to face. To whomever Jesus Christ puts in our midst, may we always lead them to Him and be an example of His light in the midst of this new darkness that has invaded our state constitutions. I conclude with the living Word from the Gospel: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (Jn. 1:5). Amen.

  1. Thank you. We need to keep hearing these statements, Fr. Jeff. We need to remind ourselves that God brings good out of the darkest of circumstances. God is in control.

  2. Fr. Jeff,, I so desperately needed to hear your words. This has been a very tough week, especially seeing so many young people celebrating the passing of Proposal 3. It is clear that so many women are blinded to the seriousness and long term affects this proposal will have on their future and that of their children. I pray for our children and that God protects their innocence.
